Why Westbourne Is Becoming One of Bournemouth’s Best Places for a Day Out

There was a time when Westbourne was somewhere many of us passed through on the way between Bournemouth and Poole. Today, it has become a destination in its own right, and one that can comfortably fill an entire day.

At its heart is a handsome Victorian shopping arcade, surrounded by independent boutiques, galleries, cafés, restaurants and specialist businesses. Walk for another 20 minutes and the busy high street gives way to the wooded slopes of Alum Chine, followed by one of Bournemouth’s loveliest beaches.

It is this unusual combination that makes Westbourne work so well. We can shop, eat, browse art, book a treatment and walk to the sea without needing to move the car. It feels more intimate than Bournemouth town centre, yet there is far more here than its village-like appearance initially suggests.

Westbourne’s Grade II-listed shopping arcade connects Poole Road with Seamoor Road and gives the neighbourhood an immediate sense of character.

Built in 1884-85 by Henry Joy, the arcade dates from a period when Westbourne was developing into a fashionable Bournemouth suburb. Its colourful brickwork, Gothic arches and glass-covered walkway made shopping feel elegant while protecting Victorian visitors from the unpredictable coastal weather.

More than 140 years later, the building still serves its original purpose. Rather than becoming a historical curiosity, it remains home to independent businesses.

Among them is Overbury’s Fine Art Supplies, where artists, students and beginners can browse paints, sketchbooks, brushes and professional materials. Nearby, Courtenay’s Fine Art has occupied the arcade for more than two decades. The family-run gallery holds a varied collection of original paintings, prints and limited editions by local, national and international artists.

Even if we are not planning to buy anything, the arcade rewards a slow wander. Look above the shop windows and its architectural details reveal a glimpse of the Westbourne experienced by Victorian visitors.

Many neighbourhoods describe themselves as independent shopping destinations, but Westbourne has the variety to justify the label.

Fashion is one of its particular strengths. Lonah, established in 2003, offers carefully selected women’s clothing and accessories, while House of Heels specialises in distinctive footwear. These sit alongside jewellers, gift shops, interior stores, charity shops and other specialist retailers.

The experience feels different from walking around a large shopping centre. Many businesses are small enough for their teams to know their products closely, meaning recommendations are more personal and unusual finds are easier to come by.

Westbourne is compact, too. Poole Road, Seamoor Road and the arcade form a natural circuit, so we can wander without needing a strict itinerary. It is the sort of place where a quick browse has a habit of turning into an entire morning.

Lunch is no longer something we need to fit around a visit to Westbourne. For many people, it is one of the main reasons to come.

The Libertine, in the heart of the neighbourhood, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner alongside real ales, wines, cocktails and traditional pub dishes. Following a refurbishment in late 2024, it remains a popular meeting place for residents and visitors.

Its central location makes it useful at almost any point in the day: breakfast before exploring the shops, lunch after the arcade or an evening drink before heading home.

Elsewhere, Westbourne offers cafés, bakeries, pubs and restaurants serving food from around the world. Everything is close enough together for us to inspect menus as we walk rather than deciding where to eat before arriving.

That flexibility is an important part of Westbourne’s appeal. It works equally well for coffee with a friend, a leisurely lunch or an afternoon that unexpectedly continues into dinner.

Westbourne has also developed into a destination for beauty, massage and wellbeing.

The Venue Beauty Salon & Clinic, on Poole Road, offers treatments including facials, massage, manicures, pedicures, brows, lashes and advanced skincare. It is open seven days a week and offers late appointments during the week.

This means we can build a treatment into a wider day out rather than making a separate journey. A visit might begin with coffee, continue with shopping or a massage and finish with lunch and a walk to the beach.

It gives Westbourne an indulgent quality without requiring the planning or expense of a full spa break.

Westbourne has something most shopping districts cannot offer: an attractive walking route directly to the sea.

From the centre, head south towards Alum Chine. The streets gradually become quieter before the path descends into Bournemouth’s largest wooded chine. Traffic gives way to birdsong as the route passes beneath mature trees and through subtropical gardens.

The gardens were originally laid out during the 1920s, using the chine’s sheltered setting and Bournemouth’s mild coastal climate. Palms and other exotic-looking plants still give parts of the walk an almost holiday-like atmosphere.

At the bottom is Alum Chine Beach, with golden sand and views along the Dorset coast. Families will find a pirate-themed play area, while walkers can continue along the promenade towards Bournemouth or Branksome Chine.

The walk is what turns a Westbourne shopping trip into a proper coastal day out. We can browse the arcade in the morning, stop for lunch and end the afternoon with sea air and sandy shoes.

Remember that the return route is uphill, so comfortable footwear is useful, and perhaps the promise of another coffee when we reach the top.

Westbourne’s growing calendar of events provides even more reasons to visit. The neighbourhood has hosted Christmas entertainment, live music, community celebrations and the Westbourne Motor Show.

Returning for its third year in 2026, the motor show transforms the streets with classic cars, custom vehicles, supercars and family entertainment. Events like this draw people into the neighbourhood while supporting its independent traders.

Seasonal planting and street decorations also contribute to the atmosphere. Westbourne increasingly feels like somewhere with its own confident identity rather than simply another Bournemouth suburb.

Westbourne’s success comes from the way everything fits together. Its Victorian architecture gives it character, independent businesses make shopping interesting and its food and wellness venues encourage us to stay longer.

The walk through Alum Chine provides the finishing touch, connecting a lively urban village with one of Bournemouth’s loveliest beaches.

Westbourne may be only a short distance from Bournemouth town centre, but it offers a distinctly different day out: slower, more personal and filled with places that reward a closer look.
