Planning a family day out beside the British coast usually begins with one question: what is the weather doing? In Westbourne, however, grey clouds do not have to ruin the plan.

This compact neighbourhood combines a sheltered Victorian arcade, independent shops, family-friendly places to eat, a welcoming library and one of Bournemouth’s prettiest routes to the beach. When the sun appears, we can follow the wooded Alum Chine down to the sea. When the rain arrives, there are enough indoor diversions to keep the family occupied until it passes.

Here is how we would spend a relaxed family day in Westbourne, whatever the forecast decides to do.

A successful family outing is always easier when nobody starts it hungry. Westbourne has plenty of independant cafés and bakeries around Poole Road and Seamoor Road, making it easy to begin with breakfast, pastries or takeaway drinks.

Unlike central Bournemouth, the area is compact enough to explore without spending half the morning walking between stops. Once everyone is fed, we can browse the village at an unhurried pace, with independent shops providing plenty of interesting windows along the way.

It is worth letting children take the lead occasionally. Ask them to find the brightest shopfront, the strangest object in a window or the best-looking cake. Turning an ordinary shopping street into a small scavenger hunt makes the morning much more engaging.

Our next stop is Westbourne Arcade, the beautiful covered passage connecting Poole Road with Seamoor Road.

Built in 1884-85 by Henry Joy, the Grade II-listed arcade is a wonderfully atmospheric place to explore. Its patterned red brick, pale stone bands, pointed arches and glass roof give it far more character than a modern shopping centre, and the covered walkway makes it particularly useful when the rain begins.

Encourage children to look above the shopfronts and count the arches or spot the different colours in the brickwork. These small details turn the building into part of the experience rather than simply somewhere to shelter.

Inside, families can browse Courtenay’s Fine Art, where original paintings and limited-edition prints provide an easy opportunity for a game of “choose your favourite”. Children often notice amusing characters, animals and colours that adults might otherwise walk straight past.

A visit to Overbury’s Fine Art Supplies can continue the creative theme. Pick up pencils, a small sketchbook or painting materials for a family craft evening later. Children could even choose one detail from the arcade to draw while stopping for a drink.

Westbourne has plenty of places offering child-friendly lunches, from cafés and bakeries to pubs and international restaurants. However, our recommendation is Harveys. They provide a relaxed place for lunch in the centre of Westbourne. Its seasonal menu sits alongside sandwiches, salads and filled croissants, offering options for both a quick lunch and a more leisurely meal. The relaxed bistro atmosphere means adults can enjoy something that feels more special than a rushed café stop while younger visitors are still made welcome.

This is also the ideal moment to check the sky and choose the afternoon route. Sunshine calls for the chine and beach; heavier rain means a slower exploration of Westbourne’s indoor attractions. The joy is that neither option requires abandoning the day altogether.

From Westbourne, the walk towards Alum Chine gradually exchanges shops and traffic for trees, winding paths and glimpses of the coast.

Alum Chine is the largest of Bournemouth’s four chines, a steep-sided, wooded valley running down to the sea. The shaded path creates a sense of discovery, particularly for children who know the beach is somewhere ahead but cannot yet see it.

Near the seafront, stop at the Treasure Island-themed play area. The design is especially appropriate because Treasure Island author Robert Louis Stevenson once lived nearby. Children can climb, slide and invent their own pirate adventures while adults enjoy the surrounding greenery and sea air.

Next to the playground, Alum Chine’s tropical gardens climb across the lower slopes. The planting dates back to the 1920s, with palms and other exotic-looking plants creating an unexpectedly lush corner of Bournemouth.

Then comes the best reveal: the trees open and Alum Chine Beach stretches out ahead.

Spend the afternoon paddling, searching for shells or building the most elaborate sandcastle possible. Families who want to keep moving can follow the promenade towards Durley Chine, while those ready to slow down can find refreshments and enjoy the view.

It is a seaside afternoon without the busier atmosphere around Bournemouth Pier, and close enough to Westbourne that the journey there feels part of the day rather than a separate excursion.

For families with children aged seven and under, Lollipops Play Café is Westbourne’s strongest answer to persistent rain.

Set inside a converted church on Landseer Road, its height has been put to excellent use. The three-storey play structure is filled with platforms, bridges, steps and slides, while separate areas cater for babies and smaller toddlers.

Children can climb and explore while adults stop for coffee, lunch or cake, which is far more appealing than trying to keep everyone entertained beneath an umbrella.

Public play normally operates on weekdays, while weekends are commonly reserved for private parties, so checking the latest opening arrangements before travelling is essential. The main play frame is intended for younger children, making this route most suitable for families with babies, toddlers and primary-school-aged children at the younger end.

Another quiet wet-weather option is Westbourne Library. Families can choose books, take part in the seasonal reading challenge or attend one of its regular sessions for younger children. Wriggle and Rhyme and Toddler Time take place on selected days, with current times published by the library.

Combine the library with a cake stop and the art materials chosen in the arcade, and a wet day begins to feel considerably less disappointing.

If the rain finally stops, resist the temptation to go straight home. Even a short walk through Alum Chine after a shower is worthwhile, when the leaves look brighter and the paths feel peaceful. Reaching the beach for ten minutes of fresh air can provide the satisfying ending the day needs.

If the weather stays determinedly grey, return to the village for hot chocolate or something sweet before heading home with new books and art supplies for the evening.

Westbourne’s appeal lies in this easy flexibility. It does not require a rigid itinerary or perfect sunshine. We can shop, eat, create, play, walk through woodland and reach the sea, all within one compact neighbourhood.

The beach may be the reward on a sunny day, but in Westbourne, rain never has to mean the adventure is cancelled.
